In questo mese di giugno 2022 ho aggiunto al mio parco ottiche Olympus il super telefoto zoom M. Zuiko Digital ED 100-400 mm f/5-6.3 IS. L’Olympus M. Zuiko 100-400 IS è un super tele zoom nel sistema formato Micro Quattro Terzi che  corrisponde ad un 200-800 mm nel pieno formato 35 mm. E’ stabilizzato, resistente alla polvere, agli spruzzi d’acqua e al gelo.

In occasione dell’acquisto mi trovo in Trentino nei pressi del Lago di Caldonazzo ed ecco allora che approfitto di questi bellissimi luoghi naturali per provare subito questo super tele abbinato alla mia Olympus OM-D E-M10 III.

Il punto delle riprese fotografiche è la sponda del lago di Caldonazzo in località Calceranica al Lago in provincia di Trento e i soggetti ripresi sono gli uccelli che frequentano le sue sponde.

Giunto a casa scarico le immagini e rimango felicemente sorpreso per la loro qualità e definizione.

Questo primo approccio con lo zoom 100-400 di Olympus è stato per me motivo di soddisfazione. Questo strumento ritengo mi permetta un significativo step migliorativo nell’ambito della passione per la fotografia sportiva e naturalistica.

Nei primi scatti con questa lente non ho prestato attenzione agli alti ISO e alla conseguente perdita dei dettagli. Ho preferito una elevata velocità di scatto. Principalmente ho voluto capire come impugnare a mano libera il super tele, le sue modalità di settaggio e la velocità dello zoom. Volevo fare esperienza di cosa significa usare un super tele micro quattro terzi da 400 mm equivalente a un 800 mm nel formato full frame 35 mm e saggiarne le potenzialità di utilizzo.

Voglio sottolineare che le immagini riprodotte in questo post non rappresentano il pieno potenziale qualitativo della lente. Come premesso in molti di questi miei scatti ho spinto in alto i valori ISO. Tutte le immagini sono state scattate con lo zoom alla massima estensione focale di 400 mm e apertura del diaframma f/6.3. Molte immagini sono state ingrandite. Tutto questo si traduce in un degrado dei dettagli.

Di seguito alcuni scatti che ritraggono una famiglia di Podiceps cristatus, lo Svasso maggiore, composta dai due genitori e due piccoli pulcini.

In this month of June 2022, I added the M. Zuiko Digital ED 100-400 mm f/5-6.3 IS super telephoto zoom lens to my Olympus lens park. The Olympus M. Zuiko 100-400 IS is a super telephoto zoom in the Micro Four Thirds format system that corresponds to a 200-800 mm in full 35 mm format. It is stabilized, dustproof, splashproof and frostproof.

On the occasion of the purchase I am in Trentino near Lake Caldonazzo, and so I take advantage of these beautiful natural places to immediately try out this super telephoto coupled with my Olympus OM-D E-M10 III.

The point of photographic shooting is the shore of Caldonazzo Lake in the locality of Calceranica al Lago in the province of Trento and the subjects shot are the birds that frequent its shores.

Arriving home I download the images and am happily surprised by their quality and definition.

This first approach with the Olympus 100-400 zoom lens has been a source of satisfaction for me. This tool, I believe, allows me a significant improvement step in my passion for sports and nature photography.

In my first shots with this lens, I did not pay attention to high ISO and the resulting loss of detail. I preferred a high shutter speed. Mainly I wanted to understand how to hold the super tele freehand, its setting modes and zoom speed. I wanted to experience what it means to use a 400 mm micro four-thirds super telephoto equivalent to an 800 mm in the 35 mm full frame format and to essay its potential for use.

I want to emphasize that the images reproduced in this post do not represent the full quality potential of the lens. As premised in many of my shots, I pushed the ISO values up. All images were taken with the zoom at the maximum focal length of 400 mm and aperture f/6.3. Many images were enlarged. All this results in a degradation of detail.

Below are some shots depicting a family of Podiceps cristatus, the Great Crested Grebe, consisting of the two parents and two young chicks.

A conclusione di questo mio post che riguarda i miei primi scatti fotografici con il super telefoto zoom Olympus M. Zuiko Digital ED 100-400 mm f/5-6.3 IS pubblico anche l’immagine di un’anatra bianca ripresa a distanza ravvicinata.

As a conclusion to this post of mine about my first photographic shots with the Olympus M. Zuiko Digital ED 100-400 mm f/5-6.3 IS super telephoto zoom lens, I also publish an image of a white duck shot at close range.

Il punto di osservazione è stato il Delta del Po in località Ca’ Mello – Porto Tolle.

Nel Delta del Po si possono trovare luoghi con un limitato inquinamento luminoso che permettono di osservare la volta celeste nella sua bellezza.

Il 10 agosto nel calendario cristiano si ricorda San Lorenzo e in questo periodo dell’anno la Terra si avvicina all’orbita della cometa Swift -Tuttle. La cometa nel corso del suo moto attorno al  Sole rilascia nello spazio dei detriti solidi. Questi detriti vengono attratti dalla forza di gravità della Terra e scontrandosi con l’atmosfera  si bruciano creando la coda di luce ritratta nella foto.

Shooting stars – Night of San Lorenzo

The observation point was the Po Delta at Ca’ Mello – Porto Tolle. In the Po Delta one can find places with limited light pollution that allow observing the celestial vault in its beauty. August 10 in the Christian calendar commemorates St. Lawrence, and at this time of year the Earth approaches the orbit of comet Swift -Tuttle. The comet in the course of its motion around the Sun releases solid debris into space. This debris is attracted by Earth’s gravitational pull and colliding with the atmosphere burns up, creating the tail of light portrayed in the photo.

Così inizia il suo racconto il pescatore che ho incontrato in un giorno di luglio 2021 nei pressi del porto di Scardovari a Porto Tolle.

Ho iniziato a pescare a tredici anni. Il prossimo anno, in agosto, faccio tombola, ne compirò 90 di anni. Sono della classe 1932 e ancora oggi continuo questa attività che fino a pochi anni fa ho esercitato a livello professionale. La pesca ce l’ho nel sangue, è dentro di me.

Con questa mia professione sono riuscito a garantire una casa e un reddito alla mia famiglia composta da mia moglie e quattro figli. Diversamente dal presente, in passato si riusciva a pescare molto più pesce e si poteva ricavare un buon reddito. Un tempo nelle nostre acque, ad esempio, in una battuta di pesca riuscivi a catturare molti chilogrammi di anguille, anche di grandi dimensioni, mentre ora se ne catturi qualche esemplare sei fortunato.

Una domanda: ma Lei, nel corso della sua professione di pescatore, ha praticato la pesca in mare?

La risposta mi ha sorpreso.

In mare? In mare a pescare sarò uscito solo tre volte e in una di queste uscite ho anche avuto paura. Dopo quelle esperienze iniziali non sono più uscito in mare a pescare.

Io esercito la pesca in acque interne, lungo i rami del Po oppure all’interno della Sacca degli Scardovari o della Sacca del Canarin.

The fisherman – Testimonies from the Po Delta

This is how the fisherman I met on a day in July 2021 near the port of Scardovari in Porto Tolle begins his story. 

I started fishing when I was 13 years old. Next year, in August, I am doing bingo, I will be 90 years old. I am from the class of 1932 and I still continue this activity that until a few years ago I practiced professionally. Fishing is in my blood, it is in me. With this profession of mine I have managed to provide a home and income for my family consisting of my wife and four children. Unlike in the present, in the past you could catch a lot more fish and make a good income. At one time in our waters, for example, in a fishing trip you could catch many kilograms of eels, even large ones, whereas now if you catch a few you are lucky.

One question: but did you, in the course of your profession as a fisherman, practice sea fishing? The answer surprised me.

At sea? At sea fishing I must have gone out only three times, and on one of those trips I even got scared. After those initial experiences I never went out to sea fishing again. I practice fishing in inland waters, along the branches of the Po River or within the Sacca degli Scardovari or the Sacca del Canarin.

Nel lavandeto di Ca’ Mello i fiori di lavanda emanano una fragranza profumata che unita al loro colore attraggono api e farfalle.

La farfalla gialla che volteggia sui fiori di lavanda è la crocea o limoncella (Colias croceus). Ripresa in volo mette in evidenza il particolare margine nero della parte superiore delle sue ali. In questo caso si tratta di un maschietto il quale si differenzia dalla femmina per non avere macchie gialle all’interno della fascia nera. Dal volo rapido e potente questa farfalla può migrare a centinaia di chilometri di distanza dal suo luogo di origine.

Lavender flowers in the locality of Ca’ Mello in the Po Delta.

The yellow swirling butterfly on the lavender flowers is the crocea or limoncella (Colias croceus). Taken in flight it highlights the distinctive black margin of the upper part of its wings. In this case it is a male which differs from the female in not having yellow spots within the black band. With its rapid and powerful flight, this butterfly can migrate hundreds of kilometers away from its place of origin.
