Vallarsa is an Italian municipality in the autonomous province of Trento in Trentino-Alto Adige. In this area, especially in winter, it’s common to encounter chamois in the woods or pastures.
The chamois is a herd-living ungulate belonging to the group of ruminant herbivores.
Main characteristics: smooth horns, close together at the base, curved backward into a hook at the upper end; it is beardless, and its coat color varies with the season: in summer it is hazel-gray, while in winter it is dark brown, sometimes almost black, except for the head, neck, and buttocks, where it is whitish.
In summer, the chamois usualy lives in the high mountains, while in winter, it often goes downstream.
It feeds on leaves, buds, berries, bark, pine needles, lichens, and small herbs.
