The valley is located within the Navajo Nation, a vast autonomous territory straddling New Messico, Utah and Arizona.
A Native American community, belonging to the Navajo tribe, lives in Monument Valley. The native population identifies itself as Diné. In the Diné Bizaad language, (Link: https://opvp.navajo-nsn.gov/dine-bizaad/), Diné means “the People”.
