Who was Marcos Rodriguez Pantoja, who died in August 2026 in Spain at the age of 80?
Marcos Rodriguez Pantoja lived in the Sierra Morena mountains in Spain from the age of 7 to 19.
Having lost his mother, at the age of seven his father entrusted him to a goat herder to help him look after the flock. A few years later the herder died and Marcos found himself alone. From that moment on, he immersed himself completely in nature and learnt from the animals how to survive in that natural environment.
It was during this period that he shared his experiences with wolves, who accepted him as a member of their pack.
At the age of 19, he was taken by the Spanish Civil Guard and forcibly reintegrated into ‘civilised and modern’ life, a transition that Marcos found difficult.
His experiences have served as inspiration for books and films.
